from comixjoint:
This Victor Moscoso full-color, digest size comic
book is perhaps his greatest underground comic work ever, and that is
saying something. Moscoso was already one of the leading creators of
rock posters in the '60s before he entered the underground comic scene,
and his talent was such that he joined Robert Crumb for the second issue
of Zap Comix as a key contributor. Color was
reportedly drawn as a storyboard for an animated film project that never
got off the ground, and one can see the animation potential from the
graceful and erotic sequential imagery Moscoso developed in the book.
Well, that was the report, anyway. The animated film project never got off the ground in the U.S., but Olaf Stoop (Real Free Press) and Harrie Verstappen in Amsterdam actually made an animated film of Color, called "Cosmic Comics." The 11-minute finished film was shown at two film festivals in 1974; one in Grenoble, France and the other in Atlanta, Georgia. It was also shown at the First Hollywood Erotic Film and Video Festival in 1984, where it won an Honorable Mention. For a time, the film was even for sale in the catalog of the Canyon Cinema Coop in San Francisco, where it apparently did not sell very well.
I've never seen the film, but Verstappen claims that someday it will become available on CD. In any case, I will wager the film does little more than our own imaginations can with nothing but Moscoso's masterful storyboards.
